Hey James, How Did This "MusicPreneur" Business Get Started Anyhow?

You would ask that, wouldn't you.

Well, it's kind of an interesting story.

This past June (2016) I travelled to Puerto Rico for a day of business coaching with a guy by the name of John Lee Dumas.

You probably haven't heard of John, or JLD as his friends call him, but in the world of podcasting and online entrepreneurship, he's kind of a big deal. Like, 6-figures per month in his business type of big deal.

Anyhow, I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur in the realm of online business, specifically podcasting, so who better to learn the ropes and get your business going in the right direction from the get-go?

I'll tell you right now, JLD isn't cheap. But I had just finished my time in the military and I had the option of either taking the money I had saved in the "retirement" account and putting it into an IRA (the safe, sensible thing) or I could cash it out and invest in my business (the risky thing).

I chose the latter. And I don't regret it for one second.

james-and-jldWhen I met with JLD, I had just started a podcast called Trumpet Dynamics. I'm a trumpet player and I took some wise advice to focus on one specific niche when beginning a podcasting career.

I absolutely LOVED doing the podcast (and still do :). It was so much fun to talk with trumpet players that I have the utmost respect for and share our conversations for others to listen to (and still is 🙂

But something was missing.

Deep down I could sense it wasn't my true calling as a musician and podcaster.

I attended a trumpet conference just before visiting JLD in PR. There was seminar after seminar, recital after recital, all focused on improving your trumpet playing.

But there wasn't a single seminar or program - not even a vendor booth - dedicated to how to be an entrepreneur in the realm of music.

Bingo! Entrepreneurship is the buzzword in all the universities these days. But what chance does a university - with all of its red tape, endless committees and bored meetings - have of teaching entrepreneurship?

This is my opportunity to add value to the music world. To solve the problem of how musicians can monetize their skills in this crazy, always changing world. When you get right down to it, that's the essence of entrepreneurship: to solve problems for a profit. And why limit it to trumpet players? The principles of entrepreneurship apply to anyone, and any instrument.

I shared these thoughts with JLD and after a lot of brainstorming, including a lot of bad ideas (OnTrumpaneur was one of the gems that didn't make the cut) we came up with the word MusicPreneur.

Perfect.

Now what to do with it. Well, this website/podcast/blog is what has come of it.

The idea began in June, 2016 and is now becoming a reality.

I'm glad you're on this journey with me. Let's make some Music!
