Easy, Killer

About a year ago, I tried having a co-host on the MusicPreneur podcast.

At the time, the show was 3 days per week, with Friday being me going solo.

So I asked a friend of mine if he would "co-host", meaning that I did all the talking while he acted as the person with whom I was having conversation, with the listeners feeling like they're listening in on it.

It's a tried and true method of doing a show like the one I do.

I thought we had agreed on the division of labor, meaning that I'm the host, he's there to help the flow of conversation.

The second or third episode we recorded together, he decided he wanted to get political. He named all kinds of economists that no one has ever heard of as sources of inspiration in his business.

Obviously, everyone needs to hear of these people if they want to have the same success.

I tolerated it, and after pressing stop on the record, I asked him to tone it down on the politics. Keep it relevant.

He didn't like that. He said, "Do you want me to just sit there like a puppet and agree with you the whole time?"

Um, Yes. I thought we were clear on that, but I guess not.

He then proceeded to berate me because I had recently taken a job to help pay the bills. He had lived in his car for several months and eked out a living teaching lessons. He made it happen without getting a "real job."

He evidently used this as an excuse to carry a chip on his shoulder.

I had mixed feelings about taking a job at the time. Here I was hosting a podcast about being an entrepreneur, and I'm taking a job?

Well, I don't feel that way anymore. Lots of people start businesses of all kinds while they have a job. They see their job as a patron of sorts for their enterprise.

There's no reason to feel ashamed for doing what it takes to feed my family.

But I haven't forgotten the way he spoke to me.

Needless to say, our "co-hosting" arrangement was short-lived. And our friendship was strained as a result.

All that to say that if you would like to be a part of the podcast in a supporting role, let me know. Maybe we can work something out.

Just don't talk politics too much 🙂

To your success,

James Newcomb
